Mandatory Units

The four core modules of the Certificate in Independent Advocacy are designed to build a foundation of good advocacy practice.  Units can be taken in any order and it is not expected that all units are undertaken at the same time.

1. Purpose and Principles of Independent Advocacy 

  • Definitions of advocacy and its models
  •  Role and responsibilities of an advocate
  •  The values and principles underlying good practice in advocacy
  •  History and development of advocacy

  2.  Providing Independent Advocacy Support

  •  Creating relationships
  •  Setting targets
  •  Action planning
  • Promoting self advocacy

    3Maintaining the Independent Advocacy Relationship

  • Respond to dilemmas in practice dilemma
  • Dealing with conflict
  • Responding to concerns of abuse
  • Self management and making the most of supervision

  4. Responding to the Advocacy needs of different groups of people

  • Ensuring accessibility
  • Non-instructed advocacy
  • Social inclusion
